Timeout New York: Apollo Heights - “Sad Cabaret”/“Reverie”

“Sad Cabaret,” with its beatific, falsetto vocals, loping rhythm and diaphanous guitar work, is a good introduction to the combo’s sound—but it’s not exactly club material, so into the fray steps Phil Mison, the longtime proponent of Balearic beats. Mison—best known to modern-day clubbers through his productions with Pete Herbert as Reverso 68, along with solo work under the Cantoma name—remodels the tune into a hypnotic disco chugger, a blissfully dubby version that drops much of the six-sting filigree in favor of mood-altering effects.
